The History of Spider-Man
Spiderman started life as a fictional Marvel Comics superhero in the early 1960’s. He was created by Stan Lee, Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby who conceived him as the orphaned Peter Parker, raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben. He was a normal teenager suffering the usual teenage angst such as loneliness, feelings of inadequacy and low self esteem which most teenagers then and now can relate to. Because he was seen as a bit of a science geek he was constantly bullied and was called “puny parker”. At a science demonstration he was bitten by a radioactive spider which resulted in him developing spider-like powers. With his super strength he found that he had the ability to climb and cling to walls and shoot webs from his wrists which allowed him to jump from buildings.
When his beloved Uncle Ben is murdered by a burglar that Peter had allowed to escape, he became so guilty that he decided to use his super-powers for the good. Uncle Ben famously said to Peter in the 2002 Spiderman movie, that “with great power comes great responsibility”. He certainly took that on board and throughout the comic books we see the young Peter Parker don his Spiderman costume to defeat a whole array of rogues such as the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and Venom.
Not only does Peter have to contend with battling evil he also has to find time to study and also deal with love. The object of Peter’s affection was Mary Jane Watson (“MJ”) who became his best friend and then eventually his wife.
Spiderman on the Screen
Spider-Man, an animated television series, ran from 1967-1970 and was the first animated adaptation of the comic book series.
The Amazing Spider-man ran from 1977-1979 starring Nicholas Hammond as Peter Parker/Spiderman. Unfortunately, the series was heavily criticized because of the changes to the original comic book story and the lack of any real villains.
The Spectacular Spider-man Animated Series appeared in 2008 and was based on the original Spiderman stories of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The first two series were set during a semester of Peter’s high school year and saw him use his super-powers to fight crime.

Spider-Man, a 2002 movies starring Tobey Maguire as Peter and Kirsten Dunst as Mary-Jane. We see how Peter gets his super-powers, his relationship with Mary-Jane and battling the villainous Green Goblin who turns out to be the father of his best friend, Harry Osborn.
Spider-Man 2 came out in 2004 and once again sees Tobey Maguire as Peter, two years later, struggling to maintain his personal and scholastic life against his duties as Spiderman. We are introduced to Dr Otto Octavious who following a failed experiment is named Doctor Octopus because of his mechanical tentacles.
Spider-Man 3 was released in 2007 sees Mary Jane as a successful Broadway actress and Harry Osborn still seeking vengeance for his father’s death. Here we see an escaped convict falling into a particle accelerator and transformed into a shape-shifting manipulator.
Spider-Man 4 is to be release in 2011 and there’s already talk of Spider-Man 5 and 6.
